To all the haters out there:
I was reading the comments on TGWTG on the newest review where I fill in for Linkara on his show. This explanation isn't aimed at those who gave me positive or constructive criticism, but rather the ASSHOLES who think they're being clever or to the whiny fanboys. Let me first explain some things:
I had no control over this project. This was Lewis' idea to incorporate me into a plotline he's directing for his show. Having me there was NOT meant to be a successor to this show in reality. For anyone not bright enough to read between the lines, this is a storyline that's meant to go somewhere! Do you honestly think someone as new and unknown as me would inherit this show? Has Lewis given you any indication that he's leaving? Don't you think this has build-up to the story he has planned?
Secondly, I did NOT write the script. When I came over to Lewis' house, he handed me an unedited version of a script he wrote in the style he would review the comic in. Essentially, I was reading his lines. I would have almost CERTAINLY changed what I said about it. Lewis apparently didn't notice the Dick Tracy looking like guy, I would have added a "Stuck in the Middle With You" joke to the ear part, and I would have brought up the Simpson's episode with the speak-easy petshop. I would have also used Iron Maiden in the opening credits too for that matter. But since this is Lewis' show, he can do what ever he wants to it, and I'm not going to dictate how to run his creation.
In short, the reason the review felt off was because I DID NOT WRITE IT!!
Some fans speculate that the reason my dialogue was forced was because I'm new and not established. While this is true and I tend to be a bit camera shy, it sounded forced because I didn't know what I was saying or where to put the inflections in my voice. I had less than 10 minutes to read the script that wasn't in a completely polished state. I tried to mimic Lewis' voice inflections because this was his show.
I knew reviewing represented a huge risk for me. In many ways, the Internet is a lot like a middle school. People are willing to point out any small detail they don't like, and since they're anonymous, they'll chortle over it incessantly because they can get away with it. That's the reality of things. I knew if I had to post things on the Net I'd have to develop a thick skin, because there's always someone out there with the maturity of a five year old.
I would like to make note of the positives from my fans. For those of you who have been nice to me, you're positive comments really make a difference. It makes me smile and what few fans I have are the reasons I still decide to keep posting. It would be really easy to stop reviewing, but I'm not done yet. I haven't decided if I want to guest star for anything anymore, but I'm certainly going to continue doing my own material.
You guys rock!!
Oh, and if anyone has a problem with me I'LL CUT YOUR BELLY OPEN!!!

Screw the haters! You did an awesome job, Liz! Keep doing what you do! ^_^
ReplyDeleteLEW!
Just finished watching the review and you were great. Your delivery was spot-on. I think some fans are just a little too hyper-focused on Lewis.
ReplyDeleteNot that he isn't a shining paragon of geekdom.
I enjoyed the review, the whiners are just doing what they do best. But after seeing what happened with Scarlet over on Spoony's site, some of these comments are unfortunately not unexpected. They're unfortunate, but this is the internet, and if you're going to put yourself on camera you have to be ready for the worst of the worst. Penny Arcade's 'Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory' pretty much covers it.
ReplyDeleteBut it's good to see you have the right attitude about it. Keep doing what you're doing and stay classy.
I've never visted your site before, and i've not had a chance to look around before writing this, but i've got to say, you did excellently on AT4W.
ReplyDeleteYou didn't come across as akward or anything of the sort, although it was evident that you were reading his script, and not something you yourself had written, or atleast editted.
While i can't blame you for not wanting to tell him how to run his own show, i think it would've been awesome for you to add your own bits to it, especially the Dick Tracy guy, seriously, how did Lewis not see him?
I hope he does get you to go onto his show some more, you did really well and have an excellent screen presence, and i'd love to see you do more reviews.
Now to go look at the rest of your site and inevitably find out that you already do reviews.
Keep up the good work.
Hi Liz
ReplyDeleteDon't let people like that get to you. They're thoughtless punks who would defecate themselves if they tried to say these things in person.
I for one like your material so far. Keep up the good work and Lewis is lucky to have you.
Ah, Internet douchebaggery, keeping 15 year old idiots amused since 2004.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that I'd take from the whole experience (aside from how obvious some of the Doctor Who bendy wendy timey wimey influence is on Lewis' writing) is that given how little experience you have in front of the camera, be he your other half or not, Lewis trusted you enough to put on the fedora and put you in front of the camera on his show and the majority of the response has been good!
Only thing that occurs to me is the dragondagger, surely you don't cut their belly open as much as you summon the dragonzord and get him to do it. Less mess for you is all I'm saying.
"In many ways, the Internet is a lot like a middle school."
ReplyDeleteYou have to realize, that 99% of the frequent users on TGWTG ARE in middle school.
The internet is the Wild Wild West, and is not for the easily hurt. I hope the feedback didn't turn you off completely from appearing in videos, from the sound of this post it doesn't seem like it did. Good for you!
Also it makes me extremely happy to know Lewis is hookin' up!
I'd like to apologize on behalf of my fellow commenters on TGWTG.com.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be honest. It was a little jarring for a Linkara fan like myself to see someone other than him sitting there. But I kept watching, and I can't figure out what people are complaining about. You were awesome!
Anyway, forget those jerkfaces. For every one douche that didn't like you, there are 10 other douches who do. :-)
Hope to see you on AT4W again!
–Tori (xfirefly in the TGWTG community)
P.S. I'm super jealous. I have a huge crush on Lewis. :-P
People hate change.
ReplyDeleteSo when something like what Lewis is doing happens there will ALWAYS be people who bitch and complain about how "Its not the saaaaame" and to be honest, I had my doubts... Needless to say, I was converted and am now glad ta know of ya.
Hope ta see more of ya (maybe even yer own review series or something?) and again, great jorb on the review. Lewis and ye work well together, it seems.
*~t3h C.
I will say that I didn't care very much for the episode that you appeared in, but at least now I know that it's because the process was rushed. But in my defense, I didn't think anything was gonna be as good as the 90's kid episode. :D I did feel that you were a tad awkward a first but you settled into the pocket as time went on.
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion is next time, tell Lewis to give you more than 10 minutes to study your part.
Bah. You did just fine and I laughed quite a bit. I thought it was a great review.
ReplyDeleteI honestly couldn't tell you werernt doing your own matereial but still you gots to remember one thing... These assholes are natural on TGWTG. There are good guys and i've never really seen the trolls but i've heared tales about them, and I want to tell you how proud of you I am, that you took the courage to come there and do a popular show. Thanks for a great review, keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteP.S.
Consediring he disapeared in a white light, you'd think people would catch that what happens on the shows fiction, not real life.
I remember the Scarlett thing with Spoony and it pisses me off too. It makes me worried as i was going to do some videos myself but unlike guys, girls get picked off a lot more because (and please, this isn't being nasty in the way you think) most guys tend to be much nastier to girls then other guys. Its high school stuff, as you said and its a shame that people can't be grown up in this day and age really. :( I hope your okay Liz, il say the same thing i did with the Spoony thing.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, we, the people that like your stuff, shall always be behind you. Coma ;) heh.
:) Hope you feel more calm soon...^_^
For what it's worth, I think you did a pretty good job, and the additional jokes you mentioned would've been good for the show as well. If anything, the ninja-style dancer was a bit of a distraction as it felt you had to have one of Lewis' characters looking over your shoulder (Though this may be my liberal arts degree awareness of feminist agency kicking in.).
ReplyDeleteFrom my uneducated viewpoint, it seems a lot of hate is levelled towards women on the internet rather than who's good or bad. If anyone follows Marzgurl's blog, she gets slammed by the Internet hate machine near constantly. And the incident with Scarlet is further evidence. It smacks of pigtail pulling to me.
In summary, haters gonna hate, and a lot of people seem scared of change (When Spoony did Party Mania, lots of people were clamouring on the comments for him never to do it again even though it was obviously a one-off). Keep up the good work, I look forward to next episode of Pen and Paper corner :)
IGNORE THE HATERZ, YOU WERE AWESOME!!!
ReplyDeleteOh internet, full of gits still!
ReplyDeleteAs many have said, I liked the review.
And personally I rather enjoyed the joke of you fitting into Linkara's style. I just had the image of a carboard robot and a ninja with signs saysing "please, you have to do this... just sit here and read, we will train you"
Though I too was sad at the lack of Iron Maiden.
I'm calling it now, Iron Liz beating up 90s Kid to some Maiden classics, I'd watch that :D
I admit, I didn't know who you were prior to the AT4W episode, but I think you did great. You were actually quite effective at mimicking Linkara's style, and overall it was entertaining.
ReplyDeleteNow I need start reading your blog...
People get jealous easily. Lewis is a talented creator and, on top of that, he's got an ever growing, loyal fanbase. Anyone interested in comics and in sharing their opinions of them would probably give their left foot to get a chance to work with him.
ReplyDeleteInstead they see you, someone they don't really know and think, "Hey, I could do better. Why does she get to do that? Let me talk some shit so she'll go away. That'll show that person who I don't know at all." Throw in a pinch of old fashioned, privileged cis-gendered male misogyny and you see exactly what occurred: a lot of baseless criticism from a bunch of dudes mansplaining why you aren't good enough.
As a few other people pointed out, I would have loved you to have had a little more input into the scripting but I also totally understand you respecting Lewis and his work. If the negative criticism is the only thing holding you back from doing AT4W again then I hope that feeling changes. You did a great job.
Please come and do more reviews on TGWTG! More women are definitely needed there. Your review was fine, especially for it being your first time and not being your script. Some people just can't stand changes and are nothing more than little immature emo whiners. Don't let the douchebags bring you down. I'm sure there are a lot of folks who want MORE Iron Liz. After all, we only just met ya! ;}
ReplyDeleteNICE speech! I've already told Linkara this over skype and I'll say it again. I think you did a great job hosting AT4W. I didn't really notice you being camera shy. But, we've all been there and I bet with practice you'll do just fine. =D. Pay no attention to the haters. I think you have the right attitude about this. Just keep up the good work and I hope we see you on screen again!
ReplyDeleteEvery new person gets bowled over by a wave of hate, Phelous, Film Brain, everybody. They dissuade geniunely funny and entertaining people from doing videos, and in doing so they ruin the fun for everybody - including themselves.
ReplyDeleteYou're going about this the right way- ignore the initial wave of hate, because its shallow and not rooted in anything. Keep at it. ^_^
Honestly, you did pretty well. I do think the two of you should have collaborated on writing that review instead of Linkara writing it and you acting it out, but I do think you did fairly well. Maybe perhaps in the future we'll have you and Linkara doubleteaming the beatdown of a comic? XD
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job. I liked the review!
ReplyDeleteYou did well. I'm just missing the point why Linkara doesn't do his own reviews. I couldn't care less about that backstory. I guess if you had collaborated on the script and done it in your style it might have been even better.
ReplyDeleteFuck the haters. You did awesome and I hope TGWTG gives you you're own show, cuz you're a lot funnier than some of their regular fair. Just sayin'. You mention Scarlett, which is a subject that instantly aggros me, because I never got to see her video, and I'm a big Scarlettopia fan, so I'd love to see some of that on camera, but as you said I can't, none of us can, and it's all thanks to the haters. And that's the sort of thing that I can't even dwell on too much with out getting furious. Like, Deicide trapped in a VW bus with the Jonas Brothers furious. But either way, I on behalf of the internet's open-minded non-douchebag population beg you to not go the way of Scarlett and stay, because alot of us really liked you and it's great to see not only a metalhead, but a metal chick, bringing something to the table. And something good, at that. Love you Iron Liz. Keep it coming and to hell with the haters.
ReplyDeleteHi! I came just out of curiosity after seeing the review and wanting to know more about you. (To be honest, I had no idea who you were... I'm just an occasional Linkara watcher...)
ReplyDeleteOh god those whiners... I can't believe how damn whiny people can be. Change anything or do anything in a different way from what they would have done and they act like you've betrayed the fans. I probably shouldn't even read the comments, actually... They just make me annoyed after being first in a great mood after watching a fun video.
Others said it too but I'd love to see you do it a bit more in your own style and own writing. I think it worked for the first time that you were sort of imitating Linkara's style and "reading his notes" as was lampshaded there. xD But maybe next time you could possibly write the script together or plan it together and have one of you write it or something idk how you like to do these things. Because the best thing about seeing new people is getting to see a new style and a new point of view.
I have a very very bad urge to scream "Evisceration!!!" in a Jack Black manner...
ReplyDeleteAnywho, Im not too sure why youve gotten so much flak, I mean look at everyone's first vids. It takes quite a while to get into the swing of things.
Just stay the course and your clan of fans is going to skyrocket. `~Lost Sorcerer
If it makes you feel any better, I liked the review with you in it more than a lot of the more recent episodes (not that I don't like Lewis, but it's nice to see new faces sometimes). Quite frankly I think you are awesome and funny and I'll keep watching your stuff. :)
ReplyDeleteHow hard is it for them to figure out there's a story going on? Or, indeed, to behave themselves? Say the word, madam, and I shall deal with these knaves Jay and Silent Bob style. ;)
ReplyDeleteEven being new at this, I think you just get better and better at being on camera. (The busybody in me says "Throw in those joke ideas anyway!")
Haters gonna hate. Don't listen to them, because really, how many of them are brave enough or funny enough for smart enough to even try and do a video review?
ReplyDeleteI really liked the review. Yeah, it wasn't your script, but you still did really well, and I can't wait for next week. Maybe you'll get to do more of your own spin on it, because I'd love to see how your humor affects the review.
The internet is filled with morons and bullies, but there are also good people too. Don't let the bad ones get you down, because you've been doing great so far!! I'm somebody who would love to do video reviews someday, if I could ever get the courage up, so seeing you keeping up the good fight in the face of jerks makes me grin.
Keep up the great work, both over at ATFW and with your own reviews, which I really like. :)
The people who felt it necessary to insult or degrade you can GO STRAIGHT TO HELL!
ReplyDeleteI will say this, though: Liz, you are much braver that 99% of the other video reviewers getting started on the web, because unlike the rest of us, you have a connection with an established talent that is essentially jump-starting your fanbase. Unfortunately, that also jump-starts the trolling, which is a real shame. I have not yet had any trollers hit my reviews, but that's because I'm still fairly unknown. You, on the other hand, went running into the spotlight. I applaud you for that and for your bravery in that area.
You are right, the Internet is a lot like middle school. I just wish more people would realize that they don't have to ACT like it's middle school in order to enjoy it. >_<
I have to say that you were a hell of a lot better than Harvey Finevoice and '90's Kid. While I think that was the whole point, the fact that a relatively unknown person can go on the show, and do better than two established characters is pretty high praise if you ask me. It's not that I had a problem with the two previous episodes, either, but more or less that the humor wasn't as stable with them as when you did it.
ReplyDeleteMy only advice on the next episode is, if you can, try to get some of your humor in. If not, try to the read the script as you would read it (given that you've read the same crappy comic, too). It's hard to try emulate someone else's style because you're always going to want to put your own style in, and it will show. This is true for reviews as it is for something like art (which I learned the hard way).
As for the jerks who berated you on it, if your knife ever gets dull, I got plenty. :P Seriously, keep that thick skin, and don't let them get to you. Ever.

ReplyDeleteWanted to touch this up...
ReplyDeleteThe only real problem I had with the review was that you seemed a bit too much like you are just copycatting Linkara, but considering he wrote the script for you, the point's kind of moot then. You just need to find your voice, age a bit, and you'll do fine. NChick started out using the same bag of gags as NCritic, but after a bit of time, she has her own style and technique.
Not much else to say then. You did a good job, good presentation, and you do the "Linkara Narrator voice" absolutely spot on, which is a bit surreal to be honest. So good job then, go far, and keep going.
Like everybody else I would like to point out that the internet is filled with annoying people and sadly a lot of the people who actually comment are the more retarded of the bunch. That does not mean that the percentage of haters, based on the comments, in any way resembles reality. It just means that the pleased viewers do not need to attract attention or piss off others, and even when they do comment they usually only do so once. Personally I can't understand how being a douche is in any way “cool”, but then again I've never felt the need to actually comment on the awesomeness, until the sheer idiocy have now pissed me of. Which is sort of sad, seeing as I would have much rather commented on what a great job you did, and how in the three reviews you've done so far you have improved immensely. Haters will be haters, but luckily fans will be fans, and you've got a lot more of the later. Keep up the good work and cut open the bellies of the haters. That'll teach them to direct their bile at the seemingly weak individuals.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, you're awesome, and I really enjoyed the review. It made me laugh, in completely the right way, and was just hugely fun. I thought you did a great job, seriously. And I totally applaud your bravery in being an on-screen presence online. I couldn't do it, my skin is not thick enough at all.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, the internet is like school. A perfect analogy. Just know that many of us enjoy what you do and that the haters are wrong, about everything. I look forward to more of your work :)
Hey. Sorry people ragged on you so much. I enjoyed the review, and have started checking out your site because of it. Live the post, nice to see you defending yourself fairly elequently.
ReplyDeleteJust take it with grain of salt. Its the internet and we all know how some people act when they are presented with something that strays from the norm that they are used to. I would think it would have been better with more time planning, and I hope the next episode will be better.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the next installment and cant wait to see it.
Well, you certainly did do a good job, even if it was your first attempt. I could say that if you tried it a bit more, you might find a niche that fits you well and all that jazz. But otherwise, majority of the negative comments are just trollers and people who know they can get away with any insult and not be judged back.
ReplyDeleteSo otherwise, I just wanna say keep up the good job no matter what a lot of people might say otherwise.
Oh, I am really relieved to find this post. I saw some of the comments on the the TGWTG site, and I was really surprised. I don't know WHY I was surprised, mind you, since I've seen some pretty awful things on the internet before. But I guess I'd expected more from those fans. Anyway, I'd been really worried it'd discourage you from continuing your reviews, and I'm very glad to see that's not the case.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I loved your Linkara guest review, and I wanted you to know so. I picked up right away that you were basically emulating his style, and I found it hilarious. And for having only done a couple of online video reviews before, you speak very well to the camera, and you seem very confident.
Also, I have to admit, I found your Sailor Moon RPG review, and...well, I'm not someone who generally squees, but I did right there. I thought NO ONE else had ever owned that book, but I did. XD I couldn't find anyone to play with me, just because there weren't any 'real' campaigns in it, and I thought you made excellent points about it, both good and bad. I've got to check out the Babylon 5 review still- I never played that, but I'm a huge fan of the series. :3
So anyway- keep on keepin' on. I look forward to your continuing awesomeness.
Dude you rock. I'm glad you aren't listening to those creeps. Did not know that about Scarlett. Was fortunate enough to get to chat with her when she was starting up GeekGems and she is awesome and it sucks that people would make a good person feel that way.
ReplyDeleteAnd I really hope this experience doesn't put you off guest-starring or crossing over. I'd love to see you and Spoony (and if you could get Scarlett involved...) do something focused on your expertise, the pen 'n paper RPG. That'd be sweet.
You rock, hope to see you doing tons in the future.
(Oh, and you should hit 90's Kid with a battle axe 6-string - for metalheads everywhere)
That explains it. Now we know why you didn't have much of your own voice in this - and, hey, given the only thing I disliked was it seeming a bit too like Linkara, I think you're going to be great. I keep hearing mentions of other reviews: Where are they?
ReplyDeleteNever mind the last question. I am clearly an idiot: I've been reading random posts on your site, and... oh, look, some of the posts I've skipped over are labelled "Episode X: Blah blah". And here I am asking about where the reviews are.
ReplyDeleteFirst: fuck the haters.
ReplyDeleteSecond: I figured that Lewis wrote the script because it had his fingerprints all over it (so to speak) but I didn't realize that the production was so rushed. That explains a lot.
Third: Why does everybody want you to punch 90's Kid? It would be like a giant punching a chihuahua! Now, if it ever happens that you have a chance to meet a certain Mr. Antwiler in person, punching Dr. Insano would be perfectly acceptable. And awesome.
Fourth: If you do guest star again (and personally I hope you do), make sure that you have a hand in writing the script, or at least your dialogue.
Fifth: No, seriously, fuck the haters. You are awesome.
*cheers for Iron Liz* I'm normally a lurker, not a commenter, but I wanted to stop and cheer you on. I like your pen and paper reviews (B5! squee) and I LOVED the at4w with you! You were delightful! But as the saying goes: Haters gonna hate. But we've got your back!
ReplyDeleteListen, I'm only 13 and I knew from the beginning that this was going to be a story and wasn't real. Anyone with a single brain cell can figure that out as Lewis was sitting RIGHT NEXT TO YOU as the Ninja. I thought you did a great, GREAT job, by the way. I've been a fan since day 1. (Literally.) Don't let all the dicks on the site piss you off. They're just trolls. Just pay attention to your REAL fans.
ReplyDelete-Masked Reviewer
Well, I've been a fairly long time viewer of AT4W and it was actually not the first reference I'd heard of you. I think it was in a livechat a day or two before the guest review.
ReplyDeleteSince Lewis gave you a recommendation and had you doing a review, I traced it back to here and I enjoy reading your banter. Kudos, you've picked up a new fan.
I also checked out your material. Yeah, it's not quite so polished but just between the first and second reviews I already see progress. I understood, watching Chain Gang 1, that you were reading from the script- it was Lewis' style all the way.
That said, I must say you're a great understudy for him. You managed to put a lot of him in your tone and the way you handled it. And kind of uncanny the way you manned the voices when you were reading character lines.
I would have liked to have seen the girls be a bit more... 'girly' I suppose, in tone. But if you'd done one thing out of place for Linkara while the rest of it had the same style, it would have clashed. For the people I follow regularly, I can tell they have a certain style, and what it is (like even when Linkara co-hosted the Warrior #1 comic).
It's funny and sad at the same time, but Spoony has fans who not only hate on Scarlett, but anyone who guests with him, be it Linkara or the Critic. People tend to gravitate toward one fandom, and anyone else trying to do something similar be damned.
I expect to see you pick up a few fans out of this crossover. Where it comes to your own material, I think you'll figure out how to balance your snark and the reviews and make something more dynamic. I'm quite impressed you choose to review these kinds of board games... certainly an untapped market of the internet community. Well, you got at least one new viewer and I'll be poking about to see how you improve.
@ libraryguy: I can't speak for everyone else, but I'll tell you why I want to punch '90's kid. It's simple, too: because that was me back in the early '90's. I am so glad I matured... sort of...
ReplyDeleteI apologize if what I said in Linkara's blog following the update, about the review sounding a bit forced at times and that you seemed to be trying a bit too hard to mimic his voice, seemed like I was trolling. I did enjoy you doing the review, though now that you've said that it was Linkara's script, I would like to see one with your own spin on the comics.
ReplyDeleteAww. I've lurked around your blog for a bit (I like your pen and paper RPG reviews! you explain the subject well enough so someone, like me, who isn't too into that can understand) and was worried that you were going to get hate comments for appearing on AT4W. You are right: the internet IS like middle school. People act like jerks and mercilessly pick on people they don't like. Then their dislike is founded on stupid reasons. The Scarlett scenario is proof of this. Anybody with eyes can see that she isn't fat or ugly.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, haters to the left. I still think that you're quite charming. You should try to let your own humor shine through next time. :)
I thought you did great on the review...and I'm extremely picky about the reviews that I watch on that site. I can understand not wanting to deal with these people, but I hope you don't give up on guest starring. You're so good already and you have so much potential!

ReplyDeleteLiz,
ReplyDeleteIt's terrible how people can act like such douche bags on the web. I don't care if you are in middle school have some class. Thought the review was good, if not great. With some great voice work.
The script being written totally by Lewis make so much sense. It didn't feel right because it seemed way too much like him and not like your personality. You're good at mimicking him, but seeing your other reviews it just came off as Linkara clone and not an authentic version of you taking command. Also Chain Gange was just not that great material to being with.
That being said I think the real problem is that Lewis expected a bit too much from his audience. Not everyone is following the Foundary so to a lot of people had no idea who you were. It's just bad plotting. There should have been a guest episode with him in the past. The warrior cameo doesn't really count. I mean story wise it doesn't make sense. You've never been mentioned before in continuity. That is unless you're secretly evil... and been plotting to take over AT4W... nah.
Also sorry for deleting past comments just spelling errors won't again.
Well, I've done it. I made an account, just so I can comment on your blog. (I am generally much too lazy, and I generally try to keep the number of accounts, and thus the number of passwords I have to remember, to a minimum. I probably oughtta just give up already. I feel like I'm all over the place, anyway. :) )...
ReplyDeleteI dunno if you saw what I said over at Atop the Fourth Wall, but I just want to echo my support over here. I really don't appreciate it when people beat down on someone. I mean, yes, I think you do still need practice, and there are some things you can work on, but overall, I think you did a pretty good job. I also think you will only get better with each passing review, and I am excited to see what will happen in the next review.
I am glad that you're not getting sad over this, at least. Keep your spirits up.
Oh, I'd also like to mention that I have been watching your Pen 'n Paper corner reviews and have been keeping up with your blog. You seem really nice, and I can see that you really are trying to get into the flow of things. It takes guts, in general, to put yourself out there... But it also takes hard work and talent to put on a good performance. So far, you're accomplishing all of the above at a fair pace. Like I said, you're only going to get better with each passing review.

ReplyDeleteIt never ceases to amaze me just how infantile, disrespectful and downright appalling some people can be...just don't let those ass-faced Trolls get to you, okay? *Hugs* You're an awesome, talented person and I'm behind you 100%!!
ReplyDeleteI thought this review was really fun to watch. The bit with the glasses at the beginning cracked me up! XP The voices you did for all the characters were really damn funny! (Oh no! Not...*gasp* "THE WARDEN" *dramatic music* lol!!!) Anyways, great job as usual, and I am definitely looking forward to your future reviews!!
Keep up the great work, take care, and Rock On, Maiden of Metal!!!!
I thought you did well, and knowing the circumstances behind the rush job I think you did very well. To be honest I liked it more then I liked the Finevoice or 90s Kid reviews (which had some amusing points but I think took a single joke and stretched it out longer then it probably really needed to) But your review sounded more or less like one of Linkara's (which as you describe it makes senese) just done by you. There were definately improvements that could be made but I certainly found little fault in your performance and look forward to the Ewok review.
ReplyDeleteMeh to all those haters. Discovered this thanks to AT4W and I had to swing by and say that you did a fabulous job.
ReplyDeleteFirst time seeing you was on AT4W, nice job. Did you do all the voices? Sounded very good. I could tell right away it was written by Linkara. Ignore haters, they don't make any sense. Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff (whatever you do) at guy with the glasses. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with what JdRavnos said about 90s kid. He's good in small amounts, but not for a whole review.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to sound like a perv, but I kept watching Linkara's eyes to see if he would steal a glance at your "stuff". He never did, so he must have taken care of that before the video shoot. Something for ya to think about. :)
... Maybe its just that I have an affinity for liking characters people generally consider annoying (i.e. Jar Jar Binks... Oh GOD, don't kill me! *Ducks behind something*)... But I actually liked the entirety of the 90s Kid episode. It was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteErr... and to keep things on topic... I have to wonder if Liz is planning on creating any characters of her own. Like I said over at AT4W, she seems to have a knack for manipulating her voice to suit whatever character... In fact, she does it much better than Linkara does.
Sad to say, but TGWTG does get the occasional troll infestation. It's not nearly as bad as some of the other places I've been, but they do come in large numbers and they are a despicable lot.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter how good you are. It doesn't matter what you say (or don't say). It doesn't matter how much work you put into an episode.
Haters are just gonna hate.
Just Thatjewishguy or Jesuotaku or Marzgurl or hell, Linkara for that matter. People will judge you and they will condemn you to cover their own inadequacies and prejudices.
Stand tall Liz!
Liz, just wanted to say, don't listen to the haters. If you love doing something, just go ahead and do it. They don't have to like it. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I loved your work on AT4W this week. Very cool to see you able to shine.
Keep on Rockin'!
Sigh. Impending novel (OK, rant.) Two of them in one day. I take ONE day off and see what it does.
ReplyDeleteI came over here wondering if you might have posted something about this. I'm sorry to say I expected the reaction. A lot of people over there have real (creepy) issues with reality versus fantasy. You'd think, though, that someone being teleported away in a flash of light to an extradimensional spaceship would clarify things sufficiently, but evidently not. You'd also think that the weekly "we should be able to track him down in about. . . " countdown would clarify things FURTHER. That certainly makes it clear that a permanent substitute was not being sought in reality. (well, to me, anyway.) Now people are complaining that there's a story at all?! That makes no sense, given how much everyone loves Mechakara, who got way more plot-developing screen time than all three "guest reviewers" put together and while I admit I was late to the party, I didn't see anyone complaining about that.
I think a few things are going on. Comic nerds are a lot known to be rather set in their ways. If a significant number of people didn't fear change, they'd quit hitting the "restart" button on universes so they can retell the same damn stories.
I suspect a number of rather uncharitable things other than that, as well, though. I think some of the ladies on that site would kill to be you, to put it gently; and I suspect a lot of the gentlemen think geeky pastimes are a boys club. (I use the terms I applied rather loosely.) I think jealousy plays a huge part in this, either way. (His family didn't have to put up with this nonsense after the Christmas thing, did they?)
I think constructive criticism is, well, constructive, but 90% of what has been slung your way is destructive, and this sort of bullying really pisses me off. Some of my creative endeavors have been greeted by unwarranted abuse, and so I know how hard it is to keep going under all that. (Intellectually, I know not to take it personally, but my brain can't seem to tell that to my soul.) I beg you, for the sake of continuity, to do whatever you have to do to finish this arc, though, not just for the story, but because otherwise, these jerks will know they can just break whoever they want.
So anyway, there are a number of us with our feet firmly planted in THIS dimension who thought you did all right on this thing.
When I saw your review on TGWTG the only thing I knew about you was that you had appeared in the Warrior 2 & 3 Review.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have to admit, you threw me off. You sounded exactly like someone who has no experience in front of the camera and is trying to mimik Linkara. I was asking myself why Lewis would let you do this review. Why bring in someone new with exactly the same stile but less experience? It was kinda jarring.
But after seeing your P&P RPG Reviews and reading this I see that it wasn't your fault but really Lewis'.
I admire him and your thinking that you shouldn't medle in his show, but you should have more of a hand in the script you are going to be working of off. Since you said you would have made other jokes, you should be allowed to rewrite your stuff at least slightly.
As far as I am aware from different commentaries on TGWTG that's the way most of the reviewers work, when they collaborate. They all have their on-screen characters and if the one who wrote the collaborative review didn't get the other's tone or the others see a joke the writer hasn't they comment on that.
tl;dr: I hope you will be appearing more aside or instead of Lewis with your own stile of review. ;)
(And I hope this is not full of fail because I am pretty tired and still feel the need to contribute.)
I'm sorry to hear that there was negative feedback but I'm glad you recognize that it was just stupid ramblings. I mean really, people thought that Lewis was giving the show to you...yeah, I could see where they get that what with the whole "I'll bring him back in a week" thing at the end, and we all know how much Lewis loves to talk about how he's ending the show...I'm sure that's why he posted his upcoming schedule and wants to do a 100th episode.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit, the review wasn't the best but it was still most certainly enjoyable. Most of the faults weren't even your own, its just really difficult to fill in as a guest role for someones show, especially one with 80+ episodes. I personally thought that you did an excellent job on camera and I hope you continue to do reviews of your own style/writing.
You are so right in comparing the internet to middle school. "Keyboard courage" is a nasty thing and makes people forget the basic rules of social polietness.
ReplyDeleteYou did great on the show. And really, the only people whose opinions actually matter are yours and Lewis's. If the two of you are happy with how the video turned out (and I'm assuming you guys were or you would not have uploaded it) then the rest of us should just be happy to watch it. Of course it isn't perfect, nothing ever is, but if you ever do another video on AT4W I'm sure it will be even better.
I hope if you do another bit on his show you can go over the script and add the jokes you want in it. That way your own style can shine through more and you'll be more comfortable with the lines. After all, when there is a guest host on the show I'd like to hear their take on it, not just what Lewis thought.
Keep doing what you're doing here and the best of luck in the future!
Alas, the internet is full of people who feel powerless and belittled by society and desperately want their opinions to be heard and to have some authority. They rant and try to belittle others efforts and consistently fail to achieve anything of note because they're too lazy or self-concious or unimaginative, and just spend their time hating on anybody who does actually make an effort or put themselves in a position to be seen.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I thought you did really well. It can't be easy to present in somebody else's style with their script like that. I thought you held against your nerves and the different style admirably. Naturally, I think you're better in your own reviews, (which I've been really enjoying by the way) but it was by no means a bad episode of A4W.
Don't let them get you down, along with all these other commenters here, I think you're pretty cool.
You do realize the comments on TGWTG weren't even that bad, right?
ReplyDeleteMost of them were just saying they didn't like the video. No one was openly trolling you or insulting you on TGWTG. So not really sure what you're complaining about here.
@Christiaan: Really? You didn't see all the extremely rude, sexist comments made about Liz? Stupid shit like "HURR DURR THAT'S NOT A GIRL, THAT'S A SHEMALE" etc? That's a little different from simply saying "I didn't like it." Last time I checked, that's not constructive criticism, which Lewis and Liz welcome. Sure the trolling could've been a lot worse, but that still doesn't make it okay.
ReplyDeleteYeah... It could've been a lot worse, but what some of the people (it was a minority; it looked like a majority were really supportive) said there was really uncalled for. Even a little bullying is still bullying and should not be tolerated.
ReplyDeletei think you did ok, and you're better to look at than Lewis, who was clearly the ninja,i seem to be the only one to notice... but unless he's an uptight ass then you shouldn't be afraid to contribute to the script
ReplyDelete@robyn-the-red
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn't see any comments like that because there weren't any.
Either the comments never appeared or they were deleted (which is unlikely). The fact Iron Liz never addressed the claim of someone calling her ugly or having a man voice (all I saw was "her voice grated on me") means it never happened. The comment it seems like she is addressing is the third comment on TGWTG of the video. If this is the case, no, she was not trolled. Really, only a small handful actually complained about the show and it was small criticism (not enough energy, didn't like voice, ect.).
No one actually trolled Iron Liz and she is blowing it out of proportion.
To be honest, I was expecting the worst. And I was proven wrong! While I do think that there's some kinks to be worked out, you didn't do a horrible job! :) I'd like to see your character get fleshed out and for you to have a great supporting role on the show!
ReplyDelete@Dudey McCool- actually, we all knew that as he's done that character before, but it's been a tradition for him to play most of the parts called for in the story. If you're involved in any creative efforts, you wind up doing things like that, or enslaving everyone you know.
ReplyDelete@Christiaan I saw a ton of trolling on TGWTG. I will not repeat what was said there for obvious reasons. But some of the responses were full of hate and just ugly.
ReplyDelete*facepalm* I agree with those saying you did a great job and yet again have to wonder how serious some people take some things. I mean, it was obvious that you weren't going to replace Lewis (seriously, folks, do you also believe he was kidnapped by a transdimensional overlord?) as host and reviewer. It was also obvious that it was his script (and seeing that he seems rather busy atm the missed jokes are forgivable).
ReplyDeleteNow that I have repeated this part of things that have been said before, let me repeat the wishes to -keep up the good work- too :)
@Christiaan: I saw trolling on TGWTG too. Many people made extremely rude and inappropriate comments about Liz. The trolling wasn't as bad as it could have been but it was still bad. Liz is completely in the right by defending herself.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, none of the comments are that hate-filled, and I read ALL OF THEM (yes, all of them)! I have concluded that no one trolled Iron Liz. NO ONE. Sure, people didn't give unending praise but no one trolled Iron Liz. The people who did criticize the video had valid points, and I think people are confusing trolling for criticism. The worst thing I've probably read was that some didn't watch the whole video because they didn't like Iron Liz. WHICH IS FINE. They can do what they want. I only saw one comment that could vaguely be considered trolling, but it wasn't, it was just vaguely rude.
ReplyDeleteIron Liz was not trolled. She has gotten upset over a minor deal. Yes, some people did not like the video, but they were not trolls. If you really want trolls, go to 4cha.
"No, I didn't see any comments like that because there weren't any.
ReplyDeleteEither the comments never appeared or they were deleted (which is unlikely)."
Um, no, they WERE deleted. Rob Walker and I both knew that bringing her in like this would cause trolling, so we diligently paid attention to comments. Constructive criticism or just the occasional "didn't care for it" were left alone. Other such comments were deleted and many of them had their accounts banned.
And trust me, there were quite a few of them.
I think that the amount of scrolling I had to do to get to the comments box just shows how much support you actually got; rest assured that if you got hate for this, that means the silent majority didn't hate it, they just simply nod their heads in approval.
ReplyDeleteThe backlash makes me disappointed, but not surprised. I think you did very well in the review, and I do hope you consider guest starring again. Until that time, I look forward to seeing more Pen and Paper reviews, I've always loved Pen and Paper games, so hearing about something I haven't used before is always interesting.
ReplyDeleteSo, just keep on keepn' on and things will be awesome.
*Shrug.* I just figured the appearance was just a way to get around the fact that the ninja-style dancer doesn't talk, but needed an episode in the arc. Made sense to me. I'm more annoyed that there wasn't more ninja-style dancing in the ninja-style dancer episode.
ReplyDeleteLiz - not familiar with you before this, but you did a fine job with the Linkara review. Look forward to seeing more of your stuff.
ReplyDeleteHi Iron Liz,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to being famous. I'm not sure whether or not I should congratulate you or send you condolences. Every single reviewer goes through it-the Critic, Linkara, and Spoony get a lot of fires burned under them.
Unfortunately, I doubt it will go away anytime soon. The best thing you can do is ignore it and/or moderate your comments. The worst thing you can is actually listen to your haters. They're just a bunch of doushbags looking for attention.
Cheers,
Natasha
All over the internet (and indeed, the world) there will always be whiny fanboys (and fangirls) who bitch and moan if things aren't exactly the way they want them 100% of the time. They're NOT the majority, they just shout louder than everybody else.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I thought you did great. Ok, yeah, you seemed a tiny bit uncertain at first, but you really seemed to get into the swing of things as you went through. I really enjoyed your review and your version of the 'Linkara' style. Its damned HARD to step into someone else's shoes the way you did, and you stepped up to the challenge marvellously.
Best thing to do is ignore the whiners and carry on regardless. I and the rest of your new Iron Army shall be cheering you on. :)
ughhh I had a look at the reviews over at tgwtg and had to resort to smashing myself upside the head with a keyboard.
ReplyDeleteI stand by my review at AT4W. It felt too scripted (which you covered here) and after watching your Babylon 5 game review (or should that be Overview?) I'm certain that more of your own personality would have been a benefit. Still it was a good review and you did a fantastic job.
I, for one, would like to see more of your character on AT4W, either as someone to challenge Linkara's reviews (thus having him defend his views on the more obscure points) or as an ally in case he needs help. Or maybe both, as long as you feel confident in your own right. Not as a cypher or transparent stand in. Iron Liz is your character, or you yourself. Show that.
The best description for those poor fools that didn't understand is "ignorant". I learnt long ago that the views of those that are not willing to think are not worth worrying about.
While a stranger can be honest it is better, especially in this day and age of trolls, morons, fools and ignorant beggars, to trust friends.
A stranger
Thomas
AKA Mountain King
Obviously, those who left such insulting comments were really agents of Lord Vyce, attempting to drive you away!
ReplyDeleteHmm? What is this "reality" you speak of? :)
Seriously, though, I had been wondering if you had any input in the script. I was a bit disappointed that it was not a collaboration, but I do hope that will change in the future.
Personally I loved seeing you on AT4W. But the only thing I didn't like was how it felt like you were nothing but a puppet saying what Linkara wanted you to say. I hope the next esp. has more of this Iron Liz I'll love so much to learn more about. Best wishes...
ReplyDeleteLike I said before, I was really looking forward to seeing you on AT4W and I think you did really well despite the circumstances. Hopefully next time, you'll get some input on the script.
ReplyDeleteHaters are gonna hate but you remain awesome.
Yeah! Give 'em hell, Lizzy!
ReplyDelete@Kari
ReplyDeleteBlar blar aren't YOU great for facking knowing that i don't care! You think you're better than me!? I'll come round you're house and beat the s**t outta you!!!
Just kidding... it just seemed that noone else appeared to notice, and i thought that they were all big stupid noo noo heads, so i thought i'd point it out, obviously you're not a big stupid noo noo head, well done :3
P.S. The "you're" in "i'll come round you're house" iss a deliberate gramatical mistake, in order to expand on the impression that i was an internettoughguy/retard with a keyboard ;)
Fuck it!
ReplyDeleteya have fun doing it?then i say do some more and your right about the five year old shit!
i thought it was interesting to see where the story is going and what linkara is takin it to next
bottle line is i hope ya had fun doing it cause it was fun watching you do it!
anyways yeah im drunk
later
Well, I just finished viewing the video and it's nice to see that the internet never fails to disappoint, with the usual inane comments that are made just because who writes them knows it will be hard for the person attacked to punch them in the face.
ReplyDeleteI have been watching TGWTG and Linkara's show for over a year now, and you did well. It's nice to see that mr. Lovhaug likes to keep his show fresh with all the various meta-plots and collaborating with other persons, thus allowing them to be more widely known.
You did well during the review, and the idea of mimicking Linkara's style, with only little time to read the script and then recording, was a good call.
I sincerely hope to see more of you, with you being able to contribute more to the script.
Meanwhile, being the RPG dork that I am, I'll be following your P&P Corner with great interest.
@Digitalartsstudent lol, really... 'bottle line'?
ReplyDeleteKeep kicking ass, Miss Liz!
ReplyDeleteAnd you're perfectly right to get pissy at the trolls. They're getting just a wee bit outta hand. :/
hi there
ReplyDeletei just discovered this blog, i didnt even know you until the two linkara episodes, but i have to say: i saw nothing negative, those videos where fun to watch, cant understand the hate
I'm a rather big fan of Linkara's, but I was actually sad to see you won't be doing any more of his reviews. :( Oh well. Now I can watch your videos here. ;D
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I didn't read your post because knowing the low intelligence of the fanboys, it's all basically common sense. In any case, they're really not worth raising your blood pressure over, are they? XD
Hi Liz,
ReplyDeleteI just came over from AT4W after seeing your second guest appearance. I've got to say that, unlike a comment above, I really don't think the hate was due to you being a woman. There are women who do things like this who get just as much (if not more) praise than their male counterparts, if only because of the desperate people online who...I don't know, think they have a shot with a girl because she's a geek and can't see them? However I also see some women do it and just get hate...but I also see that with men routinely. It's easy sometimes to say that women get the hate and men are accepted...even though there are just more men doing this, so the few that are successful outshine the fifty who get the hate.
After that long-winded preface, onto your actual performances (not like you asked my opinion, but that's fine). Honestly, I feel the first one was terrible. Not just the script, but the delivery as well. It was really painful to get through, and I think that's where a lot of the hate came from. To be honest, I also had a "who the hell is this?" factor going on, but I think most people who saw it did. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I just think if he had given some intro or something it would've gone better.
Now please, take that as anything BUT hating. Yes it was painful, but that wasn't your fault. Given the situation you were in, I think just about anyone would have bombed. That doesn't make it any better, but it's something people should keep in mind when they're commenting (to focus on the performance rather than the person). If anything, it would have been best to just give you the comic, give you a little time to see if there was anything you wanted to critique, and let you just go from there. Trying to fit someone else into his role just didn't work, and couldn't have worked (the opening part where you were dressed like him I think also is where some of the hate came from...which I understand wasn't your fault or under your control at all).
Anyway your second performance was much better, and seemed to flow more smoothly. That's hard to do after seeing all the hate from the previous video, but it looks like you addressed some serious concerns (constructive criticism) in the course of the review, so that's nice.
I'll be following some of your reviews, so keep up the good work.
Don't even bother to reply to haters.
ReplyDeleteIt was nice and refreshing to see you on the show.
hey liz, big fan of linkara's and while i can definently admit that when you showed up in the review instead of him i was a little worried not knowing who you were. still i really enjoyed this arc(don't ask me why but it amuses the hell out of me that he has epic battles and a meta-crisis in a comic review show) anyway when i heard you reviewed rpgs i immediately jumped sites to check it out, and i definently like the reviews so far, being a huge rpg fan myself. i especially thought it was awesome that you reviewed that old sailor moon game first, as that is my second rpg memory as my sister was wanting to play it. anyway i will definently keep watching. oh and it feels weird saying this, but i would say maybe show yourself a bit more during your reviews, you use a lot of stock photos to sum up emotions you are saying but personally i think facial expression and tone work even better... not trying to be rude or step on your toes... just a thought. anyway good luck and keep having fun!
ReplyDeleteEnterPostalMode - The job that was done one your part was great and didnt show that you wanted to steal the show but make it refreshing, and having someone else that is NOT from TGWTG.com doing the review is nice, A new face. And I am Also glad that there are many peo^ple here that are very supportive of you and It is my first time in your site so I am going to check around a bit ( heard you like RPG.... *glee*)
ReplyDeleteHey, Iron Liz--
ReplyDeleteHUGE fan of Linkara's here and I think you did an outstanding job. I especially loved your Ewoks review, your using Drizzt's swords against the Shades, and your reaction to finding out the Shades were robots--"Cool! That means they'll explode!" You have no idea how much I loved that reaction.
I hope that you'll be co-starring with Linkara again in the future. And I'm definitely going to be checking out this website as well.
I'm really surpised to hear you didn't write the AT4W you hosted. Your delivery was very natural, you did a good job! I'm definitely looking forward to both your own word and whatever you may be doing in AT4W in the future.
ReplyDelete(P.S. I hope the crudeness of my user name doesn't affect anyone's opinions on any comments I make to this blog.)
Liz, I've only recently discovered your blog thanks to Lewis', but I've got 3 words for you: Illegitmati non carborundum.
ReplyDeleteOn other words, don't let the bastards grind you down.
I knew from the get-go that Lewis wrote the script for your first guest review, even more so when Ninja Style Dancer was sitting on your right.
I think you did fine (my only video appearance is on YouTube in a style inspired by Lee from Still Gaming, with text cards, and I'm still surprised that my camera lens is in one piece after photographing my face, and I've not done another one since).
I hope you and Lewis team up again in the future to make bad comics burn and you get to colloborate on the script.
I, for one, loved your involvement in AT4W. And it's pretty impressive that you had such a short time with the script before filming. Since that review, I've come to love your own vlogs and reviews, even though I'm not a PnP fan as such.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your future submissions both here and on AT4W.
